About
Who I am
I’m deeply curious about the natural world. I find that the more I give my attention to nature, the more it rewards my curiosity. I mean giving it real attention, not just time. A lot of us walk through a forest while chattering on the phone, or writing mentally writing a grocery, or thinking about work, bills. I do all of that too. But sometimes I manage to get out of my own headand give nature both my time and my attention, and when I do, the rewards are far greater.
A few facts, for context
I’m a product development engineer in the outdoor recreation industry. I’m extremely lucky to have a career that points the same direction as my interests. I’m a Marine Corps veteran. I hike, camp, and backpack, and I’m an enthusiastic amateur photographer, birder, and naturalist.
Big emphasis on amateur. I’m a hobbyist, not a trained field biologist or a degreed ornithologist. I constantly get things wrong, look things up, ask for help, and learn. That’s the whole point. you don’t need credentials or special gear to start paying attention.
Why I freely share my stories and photos
I love nature, and I want to share it, along with an invitation to become curious with me. There’s no risk, cost, obligation, or hidden agenda. You don’t need any special knowledge or gear, or to belong to any group.
I hope you decide to pay attention to nature, even if it’s only to this page. Maybe next time you’re eating at a café, you’ll wonder about a pair of sparrows fighting over a French fry. What kind are they? Where did they come from? Where do they go in the winter? Are they social? What’s the context of this high-stakes drama that’s always unfolding around us, almost always unnoticed? The more you wonder, and the more you pay attention, the more rewarding it becomes.
